While Psalm 1:1-2 describes the things that the “happy” or “blessed” person does and doesn’t do, verse 3 offers a beautiful metaphor for this person:
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
Psalm 1:3 NIV
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
Father, Your word teaches us that when we choose to avoid sin and instead delight in Your instruction we are like a fruitful tree. Help us to choose Your ways rather than our own. Help us also to realize that fruit comes in its time—in Your time—not immediately. Help us to continue in those practices and stay in those places that will help us to grow and mature, bearing fruit and honoring Your name. Convict us where we need convicting; correct us where we need correcting. Fill us with a hunger for Your ways and Your presence, that we may glorify You in all that we say and do. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
